Wanted: Green Carpet?

When I took a look back though my posts in preparation for the 100th post celebration, I realized I’d been remiss in not sharing some of my little house’s before pictures. I’ve been living in this tiny house for just over 2 years. The house was built in 1941 – my great aunt grew up here. It’s darling and cute, but hasn’t had many updates. Oh, and it has super low ceilings.
Check out the super sweet green carpet. There were actually two different styles – one shag and one textured, like moss. They both felt super old and dirty all the time.

After eight months in the house, and thanks to the help of my super handy friend Meg, I was able to rip up that nasty carpet and reveal the less-nasty hardwood floors beneath. They aren’t the greatest (some discoloration due to moisture, and one random unfinished piece in the corner), but they are a huge step up from what was there before.

I don’t mean to sugarcoat this. Ripping up carpet was one of most grueling DIY tasks I’ve taken on to date. I am not exaggerating when I say that I woke up with tears in my eyes and my arms on fire from all of the pain. It involves a lot of squatting and prying to get the carpet, nails, staples, and tack strips up. And, if it's been down for awhile there's a good chance you're going to be scrubbing the carpet pad that's stuck to the floor. It is not for the faint of heart. But boy, is that payoff good. It makes me wonder why people cover up the hard wood (which in my opinion, is so much easier to care for unless you scratch it) in the first place!
What can I say? My house is a 70 year old work in progress.
Have you taken on any grueling DIY tasks recently? I’d love to hear about them!
Don’t forget – you definitely need to follow @WantedTweets on Twitter. It’s a good time, I swear. Plus, there may be some cool giveaways in the future – just sayin’.

Sadly, my condo came with bright cranberry carpet. Obviously the previous owners ha read all the blogs and books about soothing neutral colors. The carpet still remains...ugly cement below. But the matching wallpaper was down on day one. Cranberry background with mint 'roses?' the size of a large couch cusision. Loverly.
ReplyDeleteYour house looks completely different without that ugly green carpet!
ReplyDeleteTotally! It's fun to go back and look how much it's changed since I first moved in. It reminds me how much it continues to evolve, especially when I get discouraged that I haven't "finished" some projects.
