Wanted: Some LOST Closure

It’s over. All finished. And while there is much debate in my own circle of friends (and I’m sure broadly) about how satisfactory the ending was, I am here to tell you that I am wholly amazed. Sure, I may never know where that island came from, who built the foot statue, or whether Aaron became a firefighter or a doctor (like his Uncle Jack), but I do know that nothing is final. Nothing is irreversible. And you will see your friends again.
I’m not going to rehash the particulars. There will always be debate over exactly what went down. I am sure if you were hoping for answers to all of your pressing questions that you were a bit disappointed. But isn’t that the beauty of the show? If I knew exactly what those numbers meant I am sure they wouldn’t be nearly as exciting or meaningful as I have built them up to be. The show would lose its allure and intrigue. Look at it this way, without all the answers you can re-watch repeatedly without being bored out of your mind (unless it is the Nikki and Paulo episode – that’s boring no matter what).

The emotional satisfaction I received from gaining closure with all of my favorite characters by far outweighs my desire for answers. Highlights for me included Charlie and Claire reuniting, the return of Shannon and Boone, Jack and Kate professing their love for each other, Claire making it off the island, a parting shot of Penny and Desmond, and Vincent curling up next to Jack in the final scene. I bawled through the last 20 minutes of the show. Seriously. Blubbered. And then I cried again later just thinking about it. It was that bad.

Let me leave you with this. LOST was about much more than a supernatural island with a glowing light, time travel, or a Smoke Monster. I think, at its core, LOST was about the choices you make in life, how you live with them, and how you carve out relationships with strangers to make it all worthwhile. In that respect, there are no unanswered questions.

As promised, this is my final LOST post, though I can’t promise that I won’t try to sneak in a picture of Jack every now and then. So give a great big bear hug to the Hurleys in your life; it could be awhile before you see them again, and until then, see you in another life, brother.
